Perfect

This past weekend, Jessica came to visit. We had a, well, perfect visit...because if there's any word Jess and I use to describe our adventures, it's 'perfect.'

Jess got in town on Wednesday, but I had to work, so I sent her off to Mary Poppins (I felt like I was send my child to school for the first time, even though she did just fine). We then met back up and headed to Revo, an awesome event that some friends of mine coordinated with my church. After a night of art and fashion shows and music, we headed home and out to a late night dinner at Vynl. It was so great to sit and catch up through all hours of the night! On Thursday, I worked and Jess played, and then we met up with Cal for dinner. (Great new spot - check out The Smith on Bowery!)

Friday after work, Jess and I met up and headed to El Centro, my favorite Mexican restaurant in the city (and site of my Ryan Gosling sighting). After a delish meal - and of course nonstop conversation - we headed to...Sprint Awakening!! YAY! We both LOVED it and immediately wanted to see it again when we left the theatre. We also fell deeper in love with the lead actor, Jonathan Groff, and although I'm pretty sure he's gay, I think we could love each other. After the show, Jess and I went to Serendipity, where we had a charming little waiter and ate our charming enormous sundae in a charming little corner. After we left, we decided to wait for the bus inside Dylan's Candy Bar because it was freezing. We almost missed the bus, though, so after we spotted it, we bolted out the door and rounded to the corner to the bus stop...at which point I ATE IT on the ground. Literally ran, rounded a corner, and slid right to the ground. We died laughing, and it was a memorable end to a memorable day.

On Saturday, we finally slept with no alarm. We then headed to brunch at Penelope, which is adorable and is perhaps in my top five brunch spots. We I pumped our veins with coffee, chatted more and more over fab eggs and waffles, and once again had a cutie pie waiter. I was also convinced that the bartender was a guy I used to date, so much so that we called out his name like kids with Tourette's. (I now do not think it was him. Oh well.)

We then spent the day wandering through Soho, where we got Sephora makeovers from Bon Qui Qui, and Chinatown, where Jessica got a bag. I'll admit, I was not overly enthused about our trip to Canal Street, but Jess convinced me. Below is what ensued:

[Note to my family: Our lives were never at any point actually in danger. All events were dramatized for the sake of YouTube.]

So yes, Jess and I fought Chinatown and WE WON. It was all worth it, because Jess got a super-cute orangey red D&G bag and we got to perfect our iMovie skills (a feat that kept us up 'til three in the morning).

We then headed downtown to ride the Staten Island Ferry and get a close-up view of the Statue of Liberty. After taking it all in, we parked ourselves on a bench and, still dreaming about the show from the night before, shared Jess's iPod to listen to some Spring Awakening. As we listened (and did our best to keep from belting out in harmony), we spotted two cute little ladies nearby...one had long hair pulled into a clip, one had a little shoulder length bob, both were probably in their 70's, and they looked like they had been friends for a lifetime. I think that moment on the Staten Island Ferry was probably my favorite of Jessica's whole trip...sitting looking at a beautiful view, sharing a set of headphones, looking forward to our friendship in 50 years.

And then, all of the sudden, it was Sunday, so we headed to Redeemer for the Easter service. I don't think I've ever seen so many beautiful Easter lilies and flowers on one stage! We had a great time, and then - poof! - Jessica's trip was over and it was time for her to leave. I put her on a cab and sent her on her way, but not without four days of wonderful memories!

ps It's almost Jessica's birthday, so Happy Birthday Jess!

Saturday

Right now it's Saturday, at 11:30pm.  Yesterday was Good Friday, and tomorrow is Easter.  And today is just...Saturday.

Good Friday is a relatively well-recognized 'holiday.'  Many people are off work, some people fast, and some go to church.  Good Friday is, without question, one of the most important days in the Christian faith.  It's a time when we focus on the cross that we do not have to bear because Christ already bore it.  It's when we remember that Christ poured his body and blood out on our behalf.  And it's a day that reminds us about God's love for us, a love so strong that he sacrificed his only Son on a cross.

Tomorrow - Easter - is even more important.  Sure, it's a day for baskets and plastic eggs and lamb and new pastel dresses and gloves and chocolate and Peeps.  Less commercially, it's a day for family and friends and, quite often, church.  But Easter is so much more than that.  If Good Friday is an important day in Christianity, Easter is the important day.  Easter means redemption, salvation, grace and life.  Easter is a day to celebrate that our Redeemer lives, and that, because Christ rose from the grave on the third day, we can live forever with him.

But what about Saturday?  Saturday is not a holiday.  There are no activities or feasts or egg hunts on Saturday.  No gatherings.  No church services.  And rightly so, I suppose...because nothing happened on Saturday.

Imagine being one of Christ's followers that Saturday.  Imagine giving up everything you have to follow a radical carpenter/teacher, and really believing that he was the One.  The Messiah.  The Savior that you've been waiting for for hundreds of years.

But then he died, a bloody and vicious death, no less.  And all of the sudden, the One that you've been following for three years is buried in a tomb deep in the ground.  He's dead, he's gone, and everything seems over.  Done.  No more.  What you thought was hope is now despair.  What you thought you could trust now seems in question.  Where there was light is now dark.  The voice of God has turned into an impenetrable silence.

A hopeless, confusing, dark, silent Saturday.

Followed by a hope-filled, brilliantly clear, gloriously light, joyous, victorious Sunday.

You see, Sunday made Saturday clear.  The despair of Saturday was necessary for the joy of Sunday.  Because for Christ to conquer death he - forgive me for stating the obvious - had to die.

Our lives are full of Saturdays.  Full of times where we don't understand what God is doing.  Full of times when we throw our hands in the air and say, "God, where are you?  What happened?  I thought I could trust you, but you are nowhere to be seen.  I believed who you said you were.  I followed you...and this is what I get?  Silence when I cry out?  Darkness when I'm lost?  Confusion when I'm trying to find my way?  Where are you?"

And sometimes, at least for a while, God doesn't answer.  He stays silent.

But - when God is silent, he is never still.  When we can't see him or hear him or feel him, it never means he isn't right there.

Because he is.  He is always present during our times of trouble.  He hears our cries.  He sees our pain.  And his silence doesn't mean for one moment that he doesn't care.  In fact, it's quite the opposite.  The pain in our Fridays, the silence in our Saturdays, and the ultimate celebration in our Sundays are all part of God's sovereign plan, and we cannot have one without the others.

So in your Saturday, rejoice!

Because tomorrow is Sunday.

"Therefore we do not lose heart.  Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.  For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.  So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen.  For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."

Vent of the day

What is the deal with the Ticketmaster security check?

OK I know they have to go to great measure to make sure that no one fraudulently purchases mass numbers of tickets through some automatronic robot. I understand the concept of a security check word. I even understand it not being in Arial font, but instead having a loopy, mysterious look to it.

But what is up with this:

"Type both words separated by a space below"?!

Words that are not even real words ("vaude")?!

Blurred loopy font...with a LINE THROUGH IT?!

I really don't know why this is necessary. I just wanted to buy tickets to a concert, but I kept getting error messages at the security checkpoint, so now I'm too annoyed to continue.

Pfft. Or, pFfT.

It's not cheesy being green

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a total cornball.  I love chick flicks and crying and Hallmark commercials, and I especially love holidays.  I love to decorate for them (hence the Christmas lights in my office that just came down, um, last week), bake for them (helpful hint:  food coloring makes any batch of rice crispie treats look festive), and dress up for them (you better believe I never wear black on Valentine's Day).

So it should come as no surprise that today - on St Patrick's Day - I donned a green sweater and my bright green coat and headed to work.  I, of course, thought nothing of it (what other color would I wear today?!), but in the elevator, I had the following conversation with a coworker:

Jamie:  Happy St Patrick's Day!
Coworker:  Happy St Patrick's Day!  You're all decked out in green...you going out tonight?
Jamie:   Um, no...
Coworker:  Oh okay...so you just dressed like this...for work?
Jamie:  ...Yeah.

Make no mistake, I was not ashamed.  Quite the opposite, in fact - I take pride in my festive attire.  To prove this, I have selected a few of my favorite St Patrick's Day shots throughout the years to share with you today.

2005 - Jason and I on St Patrick's Day in Ft Lauderdale
We even have festive swimwear!

2006 - Cal, Erin, Sean and Jason on St Patrick's Day in LA
I was across the table wearing green, too, but this one's too cute.

2006 - Old roomies!  Me, Jessica and Erin, the day Jess moved to California
Which was not St Patrick's Day, but the pic is too good/green not to include. :)

2007 - The girls at Hoboken St Patrick's Day
Angie and Jamie, you are no longer in the running to become America's Next Top Model.

I unfortunately didn't take any green photos today...something about it being a Monday, or not being on Spring Break, I guess.  Either way, though - Happy St Patrick's Day!

"When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why, but why wonder why
Wonder, I am green and it'll do fine, it's beautiful
And I think it's what I want to be"

Feeling random

1. Book review.
I just finished reading Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs. I LOVED it and highly recommend it...to girls...who think that a book described as "Steel Magnolias set in Manhattan" sounds like perfection. I was reading Friday Night Knitting Club for my light subway/bus fare (I always have a book with me to read while commuting), but yesterday I just couldn't put it down, so I decided to park at Starbucks to finish it. Picture me, on a Saturday morning, sitting in a chair in the corner of Starbucks, with a grande coffee in one hand and my book in the other, bawling at the end of my "light subway/bus fare." I'm talking choking back sobs, mascara running down my face, right contact falling out, tears on my sweatshirt, unabashed bawling. If that doesn't make you want to read the book, I don't know what will.

2. Five year olds.
I've always never wondered how many five-year olds I could take in a fight.

15

I thought 15 sounded pretty good, but then I found out Kiki could take 20 and she's much smaller than me.
Oh well.

3. Delish.
The new dean of the Terry College of Business at UGA, Dr. Sumichrast, came up to New York this week to meet with Leonard Leadership Scholars alumni in the city. Sixteen other alumni and I gathered at Tavern on the Green to meet the dean (who is fantastic), discuss his vision for Terry, and have a delicious meal. We really had a lovely evening, full of stimulating conversation ("What are the benefits of a four-year business curriculum as opposed to two?" "I'm from [pause for dramatic effect] Marietta as well." "So what do you really think of the Spitzer scandal?"), and then I rolled home after what was probably the biggest meal I've ever eaten. I don't think Dean Sumichrast reads my blog, but in case he Googles his own name and "lulled by the train" comes up - thanks again for a wonderful evening.

4. Recent obsessions.
In no particular order: Arrested Development (the TV show. Not the "Mr Wendal"-crooning hip-hop group of the '90's). Wilco. Google Reader. Daylight Savings Time. Prescriptives' Here to Stay mascara. The Food Network's iPhone site, which is laid out in such a user-friendly way that I have added it to my favorites (despite the fact that I do not cook. (Ever.)).

5. Inappropriate?
Last weekend, I was flipping mindlessly through the TV channels when I stumbled upon "The Anatomy of Sex" on the Discovery Channel. I only watched for a few minutes, but right before the commercial break, I heard a somewhat disturbing voiceover: "'The Anatomy of Sex' is brought to you in part by Disney Parks." What's next, "Welcome to Alice's Teacups, sponsored in part by Jack Daniels"?!

6. Idol.
Who are your favorite American Idols? Mine are Michael Johns, Brooke White, David Cook and Carly Smithson. David Archuleta is over-hyped and will never be able to actually sell any records. And Kristy Lee Cook has got. to. go.

7. Go Dawgs!
In late breaking news, I'm watching the Men's Basketball SEC Final, and UGA is winning 32-17. Winning 32-17!! What on earth...the team with the worst record in the SEC is winning?! If that's not March Madness, I don't know what is. Even the commentator just said, "Are you kidding me?" OK I know it's only the first half, but let's officially forget Georgetown...Go Dawgs!

"Look fabulous! Be really skinny! Don't eat!"

It's the end of the Project Runway road as we know it.  Are you as sad as me?!  PR has definitely been the silver lining of the cloud de writers strike.  Unfortunately, we still have another month 'til our other fav shows come back.  I guess three nights a week of American Idol will have to tide me over.

For the record, before the finale begins - I am pulling for Christian to win.  He is my favorite, both as a character and a designer.  That being said, I will be okay if Jillian wins, because I think she's very talented, too...plus, I would actually wear her clothes.  Rami is fantastic, but I will be sad if he wins.  And now that I have said my peace, on to the recap...

The episode begins - 3 days until runway show.  The final three designers are hanging out at the apartment discussing how nervous they are for the finale.  They then head to Parsons, where they each proceed to size each other up with little sideways up and down glances.  Tim arrives for some final consultation.  I'm not sure of the real purpose behind this - seems like too little, too late - but oh well.  Timmy starts with Jillian.  She has one black and white striped top that is 'incongruous' with the rest of the collection.  (It may be the editing, but it looks like Rami hears this and smirks.)  It's a cute top, and what's she supposed to do - sew a new one?!  Jillian shares my sentiment and says to the camera, "I don't necessarily have a...resolution for that sweater look..."  And she pronounces resolution REE-solution.

Next up is Rami.  He shows it to Tim, and Tim seems to love it.  Again, may be editing, but Tim doesn't have anything to say besides 'phenomenal' and 'knock-out.'  Jillian and Christian look on with concerned eyes...they're thinking "Oh crap, Rami's collection is awesome and mine may not be good enough."  Interesting.  Finally, Tim checks out Christian's outfits.  Tim seems concerned and thinks it might be over-designed.  He comments that Christian looks nervous and asks what happened to cocky, confident Christian.  This makes me love him even more, because now we know that Boy Wonder is actually a human being with a soul.  He tells the camera that Jillian's collection is so innovative and cool, and Rami is amazing and successful, and it's all messing with his head.  Crazy town, this is a totally new Christian.  But then he does a supermodel strut in a trojan horse hat and says "I love models," and I feel like I'm back at home.

On to the model casting.  The three designers watch tall skinny model after tall skinny model strut in and out of the room.  Jillian is stressed because she has trouble making decisions quickly and needs petite models.  Christian needs edgy girls and dark-skinned girls, as well as "fierce tallness and walks for days."  And so day one ends.

Two days until runway show.  Today we'll be doing fittings and hair consultations.  Christian says his nervousness has passed and he's back to feeling good.  As the finalists fit the models, Rami discusses how over the top Christian's collection is...and I'm kind of thinking I agree. :(  It looks like seriously nutso big hats and ruffles, especially next to the other designers' clothes.  We'll see how it plays out, though, because what do I know?!  Christian has a HILarious scene with his model trying on wicked tall shoe booties.  The model complains about how hard they are to walk in and uncomfortable they are, but Christian tells us, "I don't care.  They'll get over it.  I worked it around my apartment in those shoes for like a week, and if IIIII can do it, theeese ladies can do it."  He bids farewell to the models with a, "Look fabulous!  Be really skinny!  Don't eat!"  AS IF models need to be given these instructions.

Jillian is reviewing her Polaroids and has decided that she doesn't like one of her models.  She calls the model guy and asks if she can switch her out for Svetlana.  I cannot imagine that it is that big of a deal - all the models look pretty much the same once you do their hair and make-up, right?  But apparently it is.  And end day two.

Morning, one day until runway show.  Jillian is still fretting about her models because they are all very different looks and heights.  She calls again to try to make the switch, but...that doesn't go over so well, seeing as it's the day before the show.  So she's stuck with the ones she's got, and this propels her in to a bit of a break-down.  Typical.

The designers meet with the hair guy.  Christian is going for sleek, pulled back, low piecey buns.  Jillian wants long and bouncy curls.  Rami does some kind of funky braid low ponytail thing.  OK sure.  We have 6 hours until the end of the day, and the designers are doing all of the last minute, final fittings.  As they zip and box everything up, Tim comes by for one last gather-round.  He tells them the order will be Jillian, Rami and Christian.  He then goes into a very touching moment telling them what high caliber they all are and that they are an inspiration to him, and they end with a group hug.  I'm tearing up!

Runway show day, 4:15am.  In a moment that sent chills down my spine, the designers roll up to the Bryant Park tents in the dark of morning.  Rami describes it perfectly, "There's something about Fashion Week in New York City.  It's kind of like standing in front of the heartbeat that pumps the bloodstream of the fashion industry in this country."  That's how I feel about New York City in so many ways, but we'll focus on fashion for today.  :)  Backstage, everyone is hectic...Christian's girls are late, Jillian's sewing things, and I'm starting to feel like a major stressball.  They flash back and forth between backstage and the tents, where designers and family members are gathering.  Oh and Posh Spice, looking may-jah-ly...posh.

RUNWAY SHOW TIME!!!!  Heidi comes out looking, what else, fierce in a sequined t-shirt and jeans.  She introduces us to the judges, Nina, Michael (who wears his sunglasses at night), and Posh, the guest judge for tonight.  Please note that I am crying, and I don't know why...I guess there's just something moving to me about seeing people reach their dreams.  (My goodness, I'm a cornball.)

First up, Jillian.  She introduces the collection by telling us she was so inspired, and she hopes we feel inspired as well.  I absolutely cannot do her collection - or any of these collections for that matter - justice with words, but check Jilly's out here.  I loved Jillian's. I know I haven't seen anyone else's, but I think hers is awesome.  It's a beautiful collection of army greens, deep blues, golds and blacks...tailored yet feminine, innovative yet classic.  It seems high-fashion enough for Bryant Park, but it appeals to a H&M, Gap-shopping consumer like me.  Two thumbs up for J!

Next up, Rami.  He introduces his collection by saying that it celebrates women, and that's what it's all about.  Rami's models have an interesting soundtrack and saunter going on...not very peppy.  His collection, though, is really beautiful.  It's got a lot of bold colors - reds, blues, golds, paired with blacks.  Actually, it's a similar color palette as Jillian's collection, so ladies take note for the fall!  The collection as a whole feels more romantic than Jillian's, and - thank God! - it's not twelve Grecian goddesses all in a row.  Overall, I like Rami's collection (here), but not as much as Jillian's.

And now, my main man, my FIERCE boy, Christian.  He is clearly the crowd fav, based on the major applause that erupts when he comes out to introduce the collection (a simple "Thanks for coming, everyone looks fierce!").  Christian's collection is definitely the avant-garde-y collection of the bunch.  Everything is black and creme, with huge hats and big ruffles.  I must say - as much as I love him, everything seems a smidge over the top, but judge for yourself here.  (ps Did anyone else notice how teensy tiny Christian looked as he walked down the catwalk next to the model?!  I literally laughed out loud.)

And that is how it all went down.  Various PR contestants are interviewed, and each of them chooses a different designer to win.  The judges then reconvene back at Parsons, and they are all incredibly impressed.  Nina gives what I think is the ultimate compliment by saying that each of the designers' collections fit right in with everything else she saw that week at Fashion Week.

The designers come out for one last Q&A session with the judges.  I must say - I am bamboozled as to who will win.  First up, Jillian.  The judges love her collection and think it's innovative, feminine, modern and detailed, but Nina thought it was a bit disjointed.  Next, Christian.  Christian is SO nervous and can barely describe the collection!  Posh tells him that his collection was very much her style, "So rather than fierce, I would say that you're may-jah."  Michael and Nina, though, thought there was too much black and looked repetitive.  Last, Rami.  Heidi loved the collection, and Michael liked it but thought the colors were too "Brady Bunch."  And it's time to wrap it all up...

The designers come back out for the final results.  I'M SO NERVOUS!!!!!!!

Heidi:  "Jillian...you're out."

Wow, okay.  I hope this means Christian won.  Jillian is super-bummed.

Heidi:  "Rami, Christian.  One of you will be the winner of Project Runway...

Christian, you are the winner of Project Runway."

YAYYYY!  Jamie bursts into tears, as does Christian.  And Posh Spice.

Posh ends by telling Christian she is a huge fan and she will wear any piece of Christian's, any time.

Tim:  "Can you believe it?"
Christian:  "...Yeah."

And that's the end!  The season was, what else - FIERCE.  Auf wiedersehen!
:)
